Step Plus

Brief

Design a product for a retirement home that can be used to better the residents’ overall well-being.

Problem

Mobility issues that come with age and/or side effects of medical conditions (osteoperosis, arthritis, diabetes, etc.).

Process

Methods for Gathering User Data

The process involved empathizing with the community to uncover the true "why" behind the design.

By observing daily activities and conducting interviews with residents, professionals, and their families.

This provided valuable insights that guided and shaped the design process.

Alpha and Beta Prototype Testing

Before finalizing the design, testing was conducted with the users to verify measurements, inclinations, weight distribution, and other essential functional details for the final product.

Execution - Final Prototype

The manufacturing process that brought this project to life included:

  • 3D Printing for precise prototyping and components

  • CNC Cutting for accurate shaping and detailing

  • Sanding and Spray Painting to achieve a smooth, polished finish

Result

Modular baseboard system featuring adaptable add-ons and interchangeable setups to meet the user's needs.

Modularity enables a sustainable design by allowing the base to be disassembled and adapted with new 'add-ons' as the brand expands, eliminating the need for repurchase.

Step+ includes the following:

  • Massage roller for plantar fascia to increase circulation and mobility.

  • Resistance step to strengthen calves, lower leg muscles, and ankle joints.
